Spazio Leonardo has arrived at the third date in its contemporary art programme with Irene Fenara’s new solo exhibition. This has animated the Gallery at the entrance to the offices in Via della Liberazione, Milan, since last spring. After hosting the works of Thomas Berra and Simone Monsi, the choice this time fell on the young Bolognese artist, who has made the use of technology, experimentation and innovation a tool for work and research, with a special preference for videos and photography. Once again, the exhibition is under the skilful artistic direction of UNA Galleria. Blinds and other Cloudings, as the site-specific show developed for the Spazio is entitled, focuses on the gesture behind every photographic operation — watching. Therefore, the project presents a selection of images from surveillance cameras saved from the continuous flow which cancels them every 24 hours. The images are then reworked by the artist to generate situations of spatial and cognitive disorientation. The interest in experimentation, innovative projects and the search for the new, the use of digital in all its forms and applications, the use of art as a means of discussion with the public in a context different from the usual one, unique and original, like the Spazio Leonardo, and the focus on emerging artists are the leit-motifs that are a feature of Spazio Leonardo’s work with UNA Galleria in the harmony of intentions and synergies emerging in the exhibition programme to date. We would like to thank UNA once again for this opportunity to work with them, which has given us the chance to introduce our Spazio to the Milanese public, and others, through the artists and the works presented and, above all, to transmit our philosophy and idea of the future. _Supervision. photo from surveillance camera_ 2018, screenshot, print on baryta paper, 37.5×50 cm 24 25
Irene Fenara, 28, from Bologna, is the third artist we’ve invited to create a site-specific exhibition in Spazio Leonardo, Milan. Fenara, interested in the mechanical eye of the cameras and surveillance cameras that watch us carefully every day, has turned the long Gallery into a universe dotted with views stolen from such devices, inverting the normal relationship between the visitor (who observes) and the work (observed). Ambiguous, illegible, grainy images, that are also dreamy and enticing, invite the visitor to go beyond the confines of the viewing, grasping the elsewhere that a system error or the blurring of the camera lens is able to project us into. The artist hasn’t produced anything new for this project but has ‘stolen’ existing images, saving them from the flow that cancels them every 24 hours — each photo uses the screenshot as a technique. Thus, appropriation of the pre-existing is confirmed once more as the favourite way of working of the latest generation of artists, well represented in the exhibitions that have followed each other at the Spazio Leonardo. Thomas Berra reproduced the stylistic features of the maestro Tano Festa and Simone Monsi borrowed images and phrases from Internet while Irene captures frames from the recordings of TV cameras on the computer screen. One of the reasons we decided to support Irene’s project for the Spazio Leonardo Gallery lies in the meaning of this simple, daily action — immortalising the computer screen, with a combination of keys, which becomes the engine of the art work here. Irene’s works open up a new interpretation of our reality adopting the most basic uses of technologies and reproducing simple daily actions. Returning to the detail of Fenara’s work in the Gallery, the artist deserves the credit for finding another reading of space — by removing the mobile panels halfway along the long wall, she’s opened the view on the multi-functional room opposite, whose windows have been covered by a window decal with an image taken from the photos from surveillance camera series. When walking along the Gallery, you can see what’s happening in the room through the windows, and vice versa. The dynamics of ‘watching’ and ‘being watched’, the thread running through the whole exhibition, thus turns into a direct, compulsory experience for the users of the space whether they’re working there, walking through it or visiting the exhibition. _Supervision. photo from surveillance camera_ 2018, screenshot, print on baryta 26 27 paper, 45.5×34.2 cm
