Genoa and the history
of Italian sport
Il 30 marzo 1851, a Genova, viene ufficialmente costituito il tiro a segno.
È la più antica realtà sportiva cittadina. Con le società di ginnastica, a ini-
ziare dalla ginnastica Ligure Cristoforo Colombo (1877), inizia a svilupparsi
la tradizione sportiva olimpica. Nel 1879 viene fondato il Regio Yacht Club
Italiano, primo circolo velico dell’intero Mediterraneo. La sua sede, al Molo
Giano, è vicina al Rowing Club Genovese (1890). Ha oltre 140 anni di storia
la sezione genovese del Club Alpino Italiano (1880). Il Genoa Cricket and
Football Club è il primo club calcistico d’Italia. Nasce nello stesso anno
(1893) in cui sui terreni di una antica villa patrizia sorge il Tennis Club Ge-
nova. Genova è anche città di tradizione pugilistica e ciclistica: Helsinki
1952 rimarrà un’Olimpiade indimenticabile per gli ori di Aureliano Bolo-
gnesi e Mino De Rossi.
On 30 March 1851, a shooting range was officially established in Genoa.
Today, it is the oldest sports club in the city. This was followed by the
first Gymnastics clubs, starting with the Cristoforo Colombo Ligurian
Gymnastics (1877) and, with this, Genoa’s tradition of Olympic sports
began. In 1879 the Regio Yacht Club Italiano was founded, the first sailing
club in the Mediterranean. Its headquarters, at Molo Giano, is close to the
Genoese Rowing Club (1890). While the Genoa branch of the Club Alpino
Italiano was established in 1880. Genoa Cricket and Football Club was the
first football club in Italy and was founded in the same year (1893) as the
Genoa Tennis Club on the grounds of an old patrician villa. Genoa also
has a long tradition of boxing and cycling: Helsinki 1952 will remain an
unforgettable Olympics for the gold medals won by Aureliano Bolognesi
and Mino De Rossi.

Sono tanti, infatti, i talenti a cui questa regione ha dato i natali

Il Comitato Italiano Paralimpico è un movimento ancora
relativamente giovane che in questi ultimi anni in Liguria
ha riscosso un’importante crescita e un diffuso consenso.
A Genova, in particolare, si sono svolte manifestazioni di
assoluto interesse internazionale quali Campionati Euro-
pei di Tennistavolo per atleti paralimpici, Campionati del
mondo di nuoto DSISO (Down Syndrome), i Global Games
per disabili intellettivi relazionali nel 2011 e I Giochi Europei
Paralimpici Giovanili nel 2017 che hanno dato un formida-
bile contributo alla cultura dell’integrazione.
Siamo quindi particolarmente lieti della designazione di
Genova Città Capitale Europea dello Sport 2024 e ci impe-
gneremo a dare il nostro contributo per una piena e con-
vincente riuscita della manifestazione.

se oltre 500 appuntamenti sportivi. Lo sport non è solo grandi
eventi, ma azione ripetuta e continua, allenamento e partita,
tattica e sfida. In attesa di un anno unico, già dal 2022 una serie
di piccoli e grandi eventi sportivi segneranno la vita della cit-
tà e di tutti i comuni dell’area metropolitana, marchiati con il
logo di Genova 2024. In particolare il grande evento velico The
Ocean Race che vedrà il suo culmine nel giugno del 2023, sarà
un motore di racconto permanente di come lo sport possa mi-
gliorare la vita di tutti noi.
