Unusual Measurements
Introductory section and preparatory phase Short Description: We all can measure length of a string with ruler, mass with a scale, temperature with thermometer etc. But what if we don’t have these equipments? We will show examples, and you also will hopefully find other examples, too. Keywords: Physical quantities, units, measurements, formulas, expressing quantities
Learning Objectives: In this case we would like to inspire students to be creative and draw their attention to that fact that they can use their studies to overcome difficulties in case of the absence of some equipment. Guidance for preparation: Nothing special is needed to launch the activities described in the following sections, but creativity.
Teaching Phase 1: Question Eliciting Activities PROVOKE CURIOSITY Pendulum can be used for many purpose. You can hypnotize with it, but… we can measure time with the aid of a pendulum, too. The period depends on the length of the string You may remember: (l is thel length of the string) T 2π g You can make measurements, record the length of the string and the period of the pendulum. To prove the relationship plot T vs square root of the length, or logarithm of the period vs logarithm of the length.
