Dagli anni Cinquanta del secolo scorso ad oggi sono state prodotte 8,3 miliardi di tonnel- late di plastica, delle quali circa 6,3 miliardi sono giunte a fine vita: il 79% di questa plastica è raccolta nelle discariche e negli ambienti naturali, il 12% è stato incenerito e solo il 9% riciclato.
