What occurs when emotion work, feeling rules, and the gift of exchange are introduced into the public
world of work? In search of the answer, Arlie Russell Hochschild closely examines two groups of public-
contact workers: flight attendants and bill collectors. The flight attendant’s job is to deliver a service
and create further demand for it, to enhance the status of the customer and be "nicer than natural."
The bill collector’s job is to collect on the service, and if necessary, to deflate the status of the customer
by being "nastier than natural." Between these extremes, roughly one-third of American men and one-
half of American women hold jobs that call for substantial emotional labor. In many of these jobs, they
are trained to accept feeling rules and techniques of emotion management that serve the company’s
commercial purpose.

Si presenta qui, corredata dei testi a fronte, la traduzione integrale degli scritti di René Descartes dati
alle stampe dal 1650, anno della sua morte, al 2009. Edizioni di riferimento per le traduzioni, oltre
all'edizione nazionale delle "Oeuvres de Descartes" di Charles Adam e Paul Tannery, sono state le più
recenti ed accreditate edizioni critiche. L'insieme di questi scritti, programmati spesso da
corrispondenti o adepti alla nuova filosofia con l'intento di ampliare e diffondere la conoscenza del
pensiero cartesiano, mostra quanto ampio sia stato l'arco degli interessi del filosofo, che spaziava dalle
questioni di metodo a quelle di matematica, musica, fisica, metafisica, morale, fisiologia, anatomia,
medicina, sino alla vivisezione. In taluni casi si trova in questi scritti postumi l'esposizione di teorie e
dottrine poi riprese nelle opere pubblicate dal filosofo in vita, o sulle quali egli tornerà a riflettere in un
secondo momento, mentre in altri si trovano teorie e dottrine che non hanno posto alcuno nelle opere
edite da Descartes stesso: progetti messi in cantiere e mai realizzati. L'opera di Descartes emerge qui
come un grandioso cantiere del nuovo sapere nel momento preciso in cui esso viene a definirsi nella sua
piena autonomia rispetto alla tradizione.

In psicoanalisi la Nachträglichkeit ci mostra anzitutto una cosa: per fare un trauma occorrono due
tempi: qualcosa diviene vero, ma solo "dopo"; l'effetto tangibile di un'esperienza appare sempre più tardi
e un ricordo rimosso diventa trauma solamente nachträglich, tardivamente. L'intuizione di Freud è che
l'inconscio è qui, nella coscienza, secondo una relazione di coesistenza e simultaneità difficile da
pensare e tuttavia ineludibile: c'è qualcos'altro, ma non in un altrove trascendente. Per questo dove
l'inconscio è (wo Es ist), in atto, là l'Io sarà stato (wird Ich gewesen sein), sarà stato un fatto o un
significato. Il ritardo è irriducibile perché è strutturale ed è tutt'uno con le cose. Il ritardo è anzi la cosa
stessa, ma non è l'assoluto. La Cosa s'attarda ma è simultanea. Che l'effetto tangibile di un'esperienza
appaia solo più tardi e che qualcosa divenga vero unicamente dopo significa allora, come affermano i
filosofi del processo, che "il tutto non è dato" e che l'inconscio è reale.

Reconstructions of Jesus occurred in Asia long before the Western search for the historical Jesus
began in earnest. This enterprise sprang up in seventh-century China and seventeenth-century India,
encouraged by the patronage and openness of the Chinese and Indian imperial courts. While the
Western quest was largely a Protestant preoccupation, in Asia the search was marked by its diversity:
participants included Hindus, Jains, Muslims, Catholics, and members of the Church of the East.During
the age of European colonialism, Jesus was first seen by many Asians as a tribal god of the farangis, or
white Europeans. But as his story circulated, Asians remade Jesus, at times appreciatively and at other
times critically. R. S. Sugirtharajah demonstrates how Buddhist and Taoist thought, combined with
Christian insights, led to the creation of the Chinese Jesus Sutras of late antiquity, and explains the
importance of a biography of Jesus composed in the sixteenth-century court of the Mughal emperor
Akbar. He also brings to the fore the reconstructions of Jesus during the Chinese Taiping revolution,
the Korean Minjung uprising, and the Indian and Sri Lankan anti-colonial movements.

Machiavelli, Pascal: un accostamento inatteso, per più versi sorprendente. Machiavelli, frugando nella
biblioteca di suo padre, scopre la casistica medievale e mette il rapporto tra la norma e l'eccezione al
centro di un mondo inventato (la "Mandragola") e di quello in cui vive e agisce ("Il Principe"). Pascal,
feroce avversario della casistica (soprattutto quella dei gesuiti), legge Machiavelli attraverso la lente di
Galileo, e la realtà del potere attraverso Machiavelli. Un viaggio negli intrichi della lettura, sulle tracce di
due lettori straordinari - e dei loro interlocutori, avversari, seguaci. Vi si affacciano personaggi famosi
(Campanella, Galileo) visti dal loro censore, il domenicano Niccolò Riccardi, detto «Padre Mostro»; e
personaggi meno noti, come Johann Ludwig Fabricius, al quale una lettura obliqua delle "Provinciali" di
Pascal consente di proporre un'immagine inedita del «religiosissimo» Machiavelli. Un invito a leggere tra
le righe, lentamente, testi cifrati, spesso criptici. Per anni Carlo Ginzburg ha lavorato su casi molto
diversi tra loro, tutti però fortemente anomali. L'incontro con la casistica - ossia la tradizione, all'incrocio
tra teologia e diritto, che riflette sulla tensione tra norma e anomalia, a partire da casi specifici - era
forse inevitabile. Un tema insieme lontanissimo e vicino: ferita a morte da Pascal e resuscitata dalla
bioetica, la casistica non smette di interrogarci, nei suoi risvolti tragici o grotteschi.

Il problema del dolore, di quello innocente in particolar modo, era sentito in maniera acuta da don Carlo
Gnocchi. Il "padre dei mutilatini" dedicò l'intera vita a combatterlo scientificamente, a lenirlo
concretamente e a sublimarlo spiritualmente. Come per Giobbe, per i grandi tragici dell'antichità e per i
pensatori di ogni tempo lo scandalo del dolore innocente non ha cessato di inquietare don Carlo fino alla
fine. In questo ultimo suo scritto, le cui bozze sono state completate sul letto di morte, il dolore suscita
due contrastanti interpretazioni: enigma per il non credente, mistero per chi si affida a Dio. La
sofferenza dei bambini diventa per don Gnocchi l'icona stessa del dolore innocente, quello che in alcun
modo può essere correlato alla colpa, e si pone come il "caso limite", la chiave per comprendere ogni
dolore umano, così che "chi riesce a sublimare la sofferenza degli innocenti è in grado di consolare la
pena di ogni uomo umiliato dal dolore".

Language in Use: The Case of Youth Entertainment Magazines is a collection of seven studies by
several Romanian, Bulgarian and Slovenian linguists on the discourse of entertainment magazines

analysis was characterized by distinctive features and that these features might exert a manipulative

In the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period open fields could be found in many if not most
countries in Europe. They took a wide variety of forms, but can in essence be defined as areas of
cultivated land in which the intermingled plots of different cultivators, without upstanding physical
