Monopoli, il mare e i pescatori. Monopoli con la
cattedrale e le sue chiese. Monopoli con le sue
piazze e le viuzze strette. Monopoli e il suo pas-
sato ricco di storia da raccontare passeggiando
nel suo centro storico raccolto intorno al porto.
Monopoli, la “monos polis”, la città unica dei gre-
ci. Situata nel centro della Puglia, a 50 chilometri
dall’aeroporto di Bari ed a 70 da quello di Brindisi,
Monopoli è una città autentica con un centro
storico ancora abitato dalla popolazione locale.
La cattedrale barocca, costruita nel XVIII secolo
sui resti dell’edificio romanico preesistente, è il
monumento più rappresentativo della città la cui
storia è legata alla Madonna della Madia, l’icona
bizantina secondo la leggenda giunta su una zat-
tera la notte del 16 dicembre del 1117. Monopoli
è una città con un ricco patrimonio storico-ar-
tistico da visitare. La chiesa di San Domenico
che custodisce le statue dei veneratissimi Santi
Medici, Santa Teresa con il cupolone che svetta su
tutto il centro storico, Santa Maria del Suffragio
con gli altari barocchi e gli scheletri dei confra-
telli esposti nelle teche di legno, San Francesco
d’Assisi e Santa Maria degli Amalfitani con la sua
cripta risalente all’XI secolo. E poi ancora le mura
di cinta cinquecentesche con il castello Carlo V
costruito dagli spagnoli nel XVI secolo, i palazzi
nobiliari sede di mostre e convegni, i musei e tanti scorci
suggestivi da scoprire. Senza dimenticare il porto vecchio
con i gozzi, le imbarcazioni che simboleggiano la marine-
ria locale, ed i pescherecci che ogni giorno, al tramonto,
sbarcano il pesce appena pescato. Monopoli è anche le città

Monopoli, the sea and the fishermen. Monopoli with the
cathedral and all the churches. Monopoli with its squares
and narrow alleys. Monopoli with its rich past full of history

town around the harbour. Monopoli – from the greek “mo-
nos polis” that means “the unique city” – is situated in the
centre of Apulia, 50 kilometres from Bari airport and 70 from
Brindisi airport. This is an authentic town with an old histo-
rical centre still inhabited by the local people. The baroque
cathedral built back in the XVIII century on the ruins of the
earlier romanesque church is the most typical monument of
the town and it owes its destiny to the legendary Madonna
della Madia, the Virgin painted on a byzantine icon who, ac-
cording to the legend, was tied to a raft arriving in Monopoli
in the night of 16th December 1117.
Monopoli is a town rich on historical and artistic heritage
that you can visit. The church of San Domenico which is
protecting the worshipped statues of the Saint Doctors, the
church of Santa Teresa with its dome protruding and thus
visible from all over the historical centre, the church Santa
Maria del Suffragio with the baroque altars and the exhibi-
ted skeletons of the brothers shown in wooden showcases,
