Kent, in P. Curnow, Coin Lists: some problems of the smaller site, in Coins and the Archaeologist, edited by J. Casey, R. Reece, London, Seaby, 19882, p. 57). Non troviamo parole migliori se non queste – esem- plari – di John Kent per illustrare lo spirito e gli intenti di questa nuova rivista internazionale di numismatica: ri- costruire la storia attraverso lo studio delle monete. Que- ste sono a tutti gli eπetti una fonte archeologica secondo la definizione data da Gabriella Maetzke, poiché la nu- mismatica analizza «i tratti esterni dell’oggetto, la sua au- tenticità, tempo e luogo di produzione, il legame con il sistema socioculturale in esame, periodo di utilizzazione, maniera di esclusione» (G. Maetzke, Fonte archeologica e processo socio-culturale, in Teoria e pratica della ricerca archeo- logica, i, a cura di G. Donato, W. Hensel, S. Tabaczyński, Torino, Il quadrante, 1986, pp. 261-321). Per raggiungere questo obiettivo, cioè la ricostruzione storica rigorosa, sarà necessario infatti avvalersi di sva- riate metodologie, quali quelle per l’analisi delle fonti letterarie, di quelle epigrafiche, storico-artistiche, strati- grafiche, archivistiche e statistiche, oltre a quelle più pro- priamente inerenti alla disciplina numismatica. L’applicazione rigorosa di tali metodologie sarà cóm- pito dei prestigiosi membri del Comitato scientifico in- ternazionale che hanno accolto l’iniziativa con favore ed entusiasmo, a garanzia dell’alto valore scientifico del periodico, pubblicato in Italia dalla Fabrizio Serra editore, casa editrice internazionale di consolidata e autorevole tradizione. Redatta in lingua inglese, da principio la rivista avrà una veste tradizionale, con contributi dal soggetto diver- sificato. Successivamente si ipotizza la possibilità di pub- blicare anche numeri di argomento unitario. Piace infine aggiungere che ulteriore obiettivo di questa nuova pub- blicazione sarà quello di rivolgersi ai giovani studiosi, i quali avranno in tal modo un qualificato spazio per ren- dere note le loro ricerche e che, ci auguriamo, risponda- no con entusiasmo a questo nuovo progetto editoriale.

John Kent’s words perfectly illustrate the spirit and aims of this new international numismatic magazine: the reconstruction of history through the study of coins. Coins are, by all means, an archaeological source, accord- ing to the definition given by Gabriella Maetzke, as nu- mismatic analyses «the external features of an artefact, its authenticity, time and place of production, the con- nections with the socio-cultural system in which it was produced, its period of utilization and mode of exclu- sion» (G. Maetzke, Fonte archeologica e processo socio- culturale, in Teoria e pratica della ricerca archeologica, i, a cura di G. Donato, W. Hensel, S. Tabaczyński, Torino, Il quadrante, 1986, pp. 261-321). To achieve the goal of a rigorous historical recon- struction, a wide range of methodologies are called forth, such as those implied in the analysis of literary, epigraphic, historical, artistic, stratigraphic, archival and statistical sources, as well as those more suitably involved in the practice of numismatics. The rigorous application of these methodologies will be surveyed by an International Scientific Committee whose prestigious members have welcomed the initiative with approval and enthusiasm, as a guarantee of the high scientific value of the journal, edited in Italy by Fabrizio Serra editore, a well-established international publishing house of authoritative tradition. Written in English, initially the magazine will have a traditional look, with contributions covering a wide gamut of topics. Subsequently, issues focused on a specific research area are envisaged too. Last but not least, this new publication also aims at encouraging young scholars to submit their papers, thus oπering a qualified opportunity to make their research known, in the hope that they will respond with enthusiasm to this new editorial project.
