REGGIO AFRICA Amici di lunga data
La nostra immagine parte dall’intento di voler
rappresentare con estrema immediatezza e forza un’idea
di uguaglianza, di amicizia, ma, soprattutto, un legame.
Nel corso del progetto abbiamo avuto modo di entrare a
conoscenza di una storia recente, che molti -noi compresi-
ignorano, che vede come grandi protagonisti Reggio e
l’Africa, in uno stretto rapporto di collaborazione
e sostegno; ne siamo rimaste molto colpite e volevamo
che questo legame trasparisse chiaramente in questo
manifesto. Da qui la scelta delle mani: un gesto, a volte,
vale più di mille parole e queste mani e braccia che si
stringono, senza gerarchie di alcun tipo, ma con forza,
costruendo quasi qualcosa di nuovo, ci sembravano il modo
migliore di rappresentare questa connessione.

Our aim was to represent with exceptional immediacy and
strenght an idea of equality, friendship, but, above all, a
bond. During this project we had the chance to discover a
recent history, that a lot of people -including us- don’t
know, where the protagonists are the city of Reggio Emilia
and Africa, in a relationship of close collaboration and
support. We were very impressed and we wanted to make
this bond show through in this poster. We chose the hands
because sometimes a gesture means more than a thousand
words: these hands and these arms that are embracing,
without any hierarchy, but with strength, building
something new, seemed to us the best way to represent this
bond.

E RICONCILIAZIONE
Un disegno che interseca elementi di due territori
fisicamente distanti, ma più vicini che mai, tra passato,
presente e futuro. È parola DIALOGO sta alla base della mia
grafica, e sta anche alla base della convivenza pacifica tra
gli uomini, tra le culture, i popoli, il pensiero, le usanze
e il credo.
Con il nostro gemellaggio siamo ambasciatori di un
messaggio globale, un invito all’amicizia, alla tolleranza,
all’aiuto e alla condivisione, per tutti gli uomini.
Elementi simbolici di Reggio e Africa, si sporgono e si
cercano nello spazio, come arti protesi per un abbraccio.
Come ponti costruiti con i mattoni dei muri distrutti.
CHIARA BONFRISCO
I’ve chosen a drawing that intersects elements of two
areas physically distant but closer than ever, through
past, present and future. The word “dialogue” is the basis
of my design (graphics?), and it’s also the basis of the
pacific coexistence between men, cultures, populations,
thoughts, customs and believes. Thanks to our twinning
we are ambassadors of a global message, an invitation to
friendship, respect, help and sharing, for every man.
Symbolic elements of Reggio Emilia and Africa are leaning
and looking for themselves in the space, like limbs
reaching an embrace. They seem bridges made with the
bricks of broken walls.

Liceo artistico della grafica Blaise Pascal
Il mio manifesto presenta l’impronta di un piede di cui la
parte superiore prende la forma dell’Africa, mentre quella
inferiore della pianta del centro di Reggio Emilia.
L’impronta vuole rappresentare la volontà di continuare
questo cammino nel futuro, pur essendo così lontani e
diversi fra noi, facendo cosi parte di un unico processo.
L’impronta prende l’intera lunghezza della pagina per far
capire la grandezza e l’importanza delle cose realizzate o
ancora da realizzare, indelebili nel tempo.
Il messaggio che volevo trasmettere è quello di
collaborazione per creare qualcosa di nuovo, a partire da
ciò che è già stato fatto in passato.

My poster represents a footprint whose upper part takes
the form of Africa, while the lower part takes the form of
Reggio Emilia’s plan. The footprint symbolizes the will to
continue this path in the future, in spite of the distance
and the diversity, because we are part of the same process.
The footprint covers the entire page just to make people
understand the greatness and the importance of the things
realized or still to realize, unforgettable over the years.
The message I wanted to convey is the importance of the
collaboration in order to create something new, starting
with what was done in the past.

MOTIVAZIONE
Nel mio progetto ho voluto trasmettere l’idea di un legame
molto stretto tra le due parti, valorizzandone l’unione
salda e l’incastro perfetto grazie alla posizione delle due
mani. Il risultato finale dovrebbe creare un effetto di
intreccio tramite il flusso di parole. Da qui lo slogan “una
storia fatta a mano” che può attingere da diverse fonti,
riprendendo il lavoro manuale e artigianale più curato e
prezioso, la fotografia del manifesto o il concetto dell’ a
mano a mano, quindi di come quest’amicizia si sia creata e
sviluppata nel tempo. Il testo riportato sulla fotografia
sono alcune delle parole caratterizzanti il rapporto che
contraddistingue la storia e il presente di Reggio-Africa.
Entrambe le braccia sono state volutamente poste in
verticale per rimandare al “fist bump” equivalente ad una
stretta di mano o al battersi il cinque, comunemente usato
dai giovani in modo appunto amichevole.

In my project I wanted to communicate the idea of a close
relationship between the two parts, enhancing the solid
union and the perfect frame through the position of
the hands. The final result should create an effect of
entanglement through the stream of words. Hence the slogan:
“A handmade history” (una storia fatta a mano), that can
gleans the informations from different sources, starting
with the manual and handcrafted labor, more well-finished
and precious, continuing with the picture of the poster or
the concept of the “handmade”, but also the beginning and
development of this friendship. The words I reported on the
picture are some of the words that have characterised the
past and present relationship between Reggio Emilia and
Africa. I have put intentionally both arms vertically in
order to recall the “fist-bump”, that is a handshake or a
high-five, often used by young people in a friendly way.

Viene presentata la sagoma del continente africano, ma al
posto degli stati africani, sono state aggiunte delle parole
che significano il rapporto che c’è tra appunto Reggio e
Africa.
Non è presente qualcosa che descriva in sé l’Africa e
viceversa la città di Reggio Emilia, ma sono presenti
piuttosto soltanto parole che descrivono il loro rapporto.
Appaiono ovviamente le parole “Reggio Africa” e
“Amicizia”: ciò che deve risaltare per capire di cosa si
tratta la seguente cartolina.
E’ semplice ed essenziale; un complesso di parole, le quali
presentano stili e dimensioni diversi, che manifestano la
grande amicizia tra Reggio e Africa.

In my poster I have represented the Template of the
African continent, but instead of African States, I have
added some words that explain the relationship between
Reggio Emilia and Africa.
I haven’t put something that describes the city of Reggio
Emilia and the African continent, but I have chosen to put
words that explain the bond between them.
Obviously there are the words “Reggio-Africa” and
“friendship” : the most important concepts to understand
what this poster is about.
It’s very simple and essential: a combination of words, that
represents different styles and dimensions and that shows
the great friendship between Reggio Emilia and Africa.

pubblicitarie di Haydee Alonso, una giovane artista
di gioielleria che da sempre è stata influenzata da più
culture.
Naturalmente questa cosa ha suscitato il mio interesse
poiche’ ho cercato di unire due culture differenti, che ho
rappresentato attraverso le mani, immerse nel colore che
allude alla cultura reciproca.
Sono due mani tendenti l’una all’altra per simboleggiare
la voglia di conoscersi meglio e dire ‘’io per te ci sono’’.

My project is inspired to Haydee Alonso advertisement
pictures. She is a young jewellery artist who has always
been influenced by different cultures.
This artist has raised my interest, because, as Haydee
Alonso, I have tried to connect two different cultures,
that I have represented through the hands, immersed in the
colour, that represents the two cultures.
I have placed two hands leaning each other symbolizing the
will to know each other better and saying:
“I’m here for you”.

profonda amicizia che si è instaurata negli anni tra la
città di Reggio Emilia e il continente Africano, da qui
anche il titolo “Profondamente amici”. Come simbolo di
questa amicizia ho creato una scavatura che inizialmente
prende la forma esagonale della cartina della città
emiliana e della sua caratteristica via principale, Via
Emilia. Mano a mano che si scava in profondità gli strati
cambiano forma, fino ad arrivare a formare l’Africa. I
colori sono paragonati agli strati terrestri , partendo
da un color terra in superficie, fino ad arrivare ai colori
caldi del nucleo. Nel cuore di Reggio dunque, c’è stata, c’è
e ci sarà sempre un po’ di Africa.

In my poster I wanted to represent the deep bond that the
city of Reggio Emilia and the African continent have
established during the years. This is the reason why I have
chosen the title “deeply friends”. I have decided to use as
symbol of this friendship a trenching that, at first, takes
the hexagonal shape of Reggio Emilia seen from above and
of his most famous street: Via Emilia. As the trenching
gets more in the deep, the layers change their shape, until
they frame the African continent. I have chosen to use
the colours of the earth, starting with the colour of the
ground on the top layer, up to the warm colours of the
Earth’s core. Into the heart of Reggio Emilia there was and
there will always be a little bit of Africa.

intercorre da molti anni tra Reggio Emilia e il continente
africano. Ho optato per un linguaggio semplice utilizzando
solo due icone (Tricolore italiano e continente africano)
che permettono di riconoscere facilmente le due parti.
Inoltre il segno pittorico e materico sta a simboleggiare
l’ Africa che è legata alla nostra città. Il titolo, “Reggio
and Africa WHY?”, invece, cerca di invogliare chi lo
guarda ad informarsi su ciò che non sa attraverso un tono
provocatorio dato dalla domanda.

This poster relates the friendship that has been existing
between Reggio Emilia and Africa for years. I have opted
for a simple language using just two symbols: the Italian
flag and the African continent, that permit to the viewer
to recognise easily the two protagonists. Moreover the
pictorial and earthy sign symbolizes Africa. In the end,
the title “Reggio and Africa... WHY?” tries provocatively
to encourage the viewer to seek informations about what he
doesn’t know.

L’intenzione del mio manifesto è quella di rappresentare
sia l’aggancio e la collaborazione tra due luoghi così
distanti e profondamente diversi, sia l’innovazione di un
paese che crediamo ancora molto arretrato, l’Africa.
Il ponte è anche simbolo di un collegamento reale, fisico, e
stimola la suggestione di uno scambio di informazioni, di
credenze e di valori; è anche indicatore dell’avanzamento
tecnologico di una società, in quanto vengono
quotidianamente effettuate ricerche e studi per creare
ponti sempre più performanti.
Il progresso e il futuro sono i concetti chiave del visual.

My intent was to represent through my poster the bond and
the collaboration between two places so distant and deeply
different, but also the development of a continent that we
still believe underdeveloped: Africa.
The bridge symbolizes a real connection and also suggests
an exchange of informations, believes and values; it shows
us the technological progress of a society, because every
day new researches and studies are run in order to create
more performing bridges.
Progress and future are the key concepts of visual design.

STORIA DI UNA AMICIZIANella mia cartolina viene presentata una fusione tra
aspetti che caratterizzano Reggio e l’Africa. Sullo
sfondo è presente un’immagine fotografica del comune di
Reggio Emilia che caratterizza appunto la città, mentre
per l’Africa vi è una striscia colorata con colori vivaci
e accesi, composta da pattern che spiccano e ricordano
l’ Africa. La fascia passa leggera sopra la città, come
un’ondata di vita che permea tutti i cittadini e porta un
piccolo pezzo di Africa nel cuore di Reggio Emilia. Questa
fusione simboleggia il profondo legame di amicizia che
intercorre tra la nostra città e il continente africano.

In my poster it is presented a fusion between aspects that
characterise Reggio Emilia and Africa. In the background
there is a picture of Reggio Emilia’s city-hall, that
typifies the city, while for Africa there is a stripe of vivid
and bright colours, composed of patterns that stand out
and remember Africa. The stripe passes lightly over the
city, like a wave of life that permeates all the citizens
and brings a little piece of Africa in the heart of Reggio
Emilia. This fusion symbolizes the deep friendship that
exists between our city and the African continent.
CRISTINA MAGNANIIl legame d’amicizia tra Reggio Emilia e l’Africa viene
espresso dal Volo compiuto insieme da una ragazza
africana con le caratteristiche treccine e uno dei ponti
di Calatrava presenti a Reggio, la cui forma genera
delle ali assieme alle braccia della ragazza. Questo volo
rappresenta simbolicamente il perdurare del loro legame
d’amicizia anche nel futuro, verso un domani da costruire
insieme, dove la presenza di entrambi è necessaria l’uno
all’altro. Ecco il perché della scia, del volo “a 4 ali”,
a ribadire la presenza di entrambi in questo percorso,
e della doppia figura che sembra spiccare il volo verso
destra, conferendo dinamismo al messaggio.

The friendship between Reggio Emilia and Africa is
expressed through a flight, made by an African girl with
the characteristic braids and one of Calatrava’s bridges
present in Reggio Emilia, whose shape forms wings with the
arms of the girl. This flight represents symbolically the
persist of their relationship also in the future, toward
a tomorrow to build together, where the presence of both
is necessary for each other. That’s why I have chosen the
contrail, the flight “four-wings”, in order to reiterate
the presence of both in this path. In the end, the double
figure seems to take flight to the right, lending dynamism
to the message.
ANGELA NAPPAL’ambiente è una parte significativa di una città, di
uno stato o di un continente e ho voluto valorizzarlo
attraverso lo skyline. Ho unificato elementi principali e
riconoscibili della nostra città, come i ponti di Calatrava
e la Mediopadana e dell’Africa, come gli animali, la natura
e i grattacieli di Johannesburg creandone dei profili. Il
risultato è di tre livelli a trama cartacea con i diversi
elementi, del colore neutro tipico della carta. I colori
dello sfondo e del titolo sono complementari e raccontano
queste due realtà, il rosso intenso e caldo per l’Africa e
l’azzurro-grigio più freddo per Reggio. In alto la scritta
“Amici dal 1965” racchiude la storia di questa lunga
amicizia tra il continente e la nostra città.
AURORA PUTIGNANO
The environment it’s a significant part of a city, a State
or a continent and I wanted to give value to that through
the skyline. I have put together the main and recognizable
elements of our city, like Calatrava’s bridges and high-
speed Station, but also some elements of the African
continent, like the animals, the nature, and Johanessburg
skyscrapers. Then I have created their outlines. The result
is a paper texture made of three levels with different
elements of a neutral colour. The colours of the background
and the title are complementaries and they describe these
two realities. The intense and warm red was used for the
African continent, while the blue-gray, colder, was used
for Reggio Emilia. On the top, the writing “Friends since
1965” contains the history of this long-lasting friendship
between our city and Africa.

L’impegno a conoscere davvero ciò che tanto ci appare
lontano e diverso è un arricchimento per noi e per gli
altri, e i gioielli indossati dalla donna africana,
rappresentanti le architetture più emblematiche della
nostra città, ne sono il simbolo. La ragazza diventa più
bella indossando i gioielli, mentre questi rivestono
pienamente la propria funzione solo nel momento in cui
vengono indossati.
Dovremmo imparare a vivere la diversità che ci circonda
come un valore aggiunto e non come una limitazione alla
nostra identità.
Dovremmo fare come questa bellissima ragazza africana:
guardare al futuro.
Un futuro di arricchimento reciproco.

It’s a mutual enrichment.
The task of really knowing what appears to us so distant
and different, it’s an enrichment for us but also for the
others. The jewels worn by the African woman, representing
the architectures more emblematic of our city, are
the symbol of this knowledge. The woman becomes more
beautiful wearing these jewels, and they fulfil their
function only when they are worn by her.
We should learn to live the diversity that surrounds us as
an added value and not as a limitation of our identity.
We should do what the African woman does: look to the
future.
A future of mutual enrichment.

Giornata mondiale dell’Africa INTERNATIONAL DAY E RICONCILIAZIONEIl messaggio centrale del mio manifesto è senza dubbio
il legame di scambio interculturale presente fra le due
figure; ho cercato di rappresentare come meglio possibile
l’interdipendenza presente fra i soggetti, con richiami
cromatici. Nonostante ciò ho voluto differenziarli e
caratterizzarli a seconda delle caratteristiche proprie
della cultura di riferimento. Inoltre ho posto le
silhouette allo stesso livello per non creare disequilibrio
e dare a ciascuna delle due la medesima rilevanza. In
questo modo si crea un rapporto di interdipendenza
indivisibile secondo il quale una figura non sarebbe
efficace senza l’altra.

The message of my poster without a doubt is the bond of
intercultural exchange between the two figures; I have
tried to represent as well as possible the interdependence
between the protagonists through chromatic recalls.
However I have wanted to differentiate and characterise
them according to culture’s characteristics. Moreover I
have put the silhouettes at the same level in order to avoid
imbalance and give both the same importance. This creates
a relation of interdependence idivisible by which a figure
wouldn’t be efficient without the other.
MARTA AURIEMMAIl nostro visual si basa su un’immagine in cui le mani
di alcuni ragazzi reggiani e africani si uniscono per
creare i contorni del continente africano. Il linguaggio
fotografico rappresenta in modo realistico le persone e
le comunità a cui appartengono e il forte legame che si
percepisce tra queste, rimane vivo e costante grazie alla
collaborazione di tutti. Il titolo evocativo, dai toni
amichevoli e un sottotitolo più descrittivo comunicano
in modo chiaro il rapporto di amicizia tra Reggio Emilia
e l’Africa. Per problemi di visualizzazione non è stato
possibile inserire il Madagascar nonostante abbia un ruolo
nel rapporto Reggio-Africa.

Our visual is based on a picture where some boys from
Reggio Emilia and from Africa put their hands togethrr
in order to create the outline of the African continent.
The photografic language represents in a realistic way
people and communities to which they belong and the
strong bond that is perceived between them remains alive
and stable thanks to the collaboration of everyone. The
evocative title, has a friendly spirit, while the subtitle
is more descriptive; they communicate in a clear way
the friendship between Reggio Emilia and Africa. Due to
problems of visualisation it was not possible to insert
Madagascar although it has an important role in the
relationship between Reggio Emilia and Africa.

INTERNATIONAL DAYLa proposta del manifesto è nata dall’unione di un icona citta-
dina come la piazza principale di Reggio Emilia, con un simbolo
tipicamente africano come il Baobab. L’idea del progetto è sta-
ta realizzata come incontro fra le due culture, ma con diversi
stili di rappresentazione. L’albero disegnato è in contrasto
con la foto della Piazza Municipale, questo escamotage è voluto
in quanto se l’albero fosse stato realizzato con uno stile più
realistica sarebbe stato forse troppo violenta questa unione,
al contrario con questo metodo la fusione tra le due culture ri-
sulta più leggera e “fantastica” come descrive anche il titolo.
Sul ramo spezzato del Baobab è legato un nastro su cui è scritto
“N. Mandela”, il richiamo evidente alla grande figura di questo
personaggio aiuta a comprendere meglio l’origine dello stesso
albero, del nostro legame con l’Africa. Lo stile della grafica
del manifesto è realizzato a tavoletta grafica che, con un lin-
guaggio semplice e giocoso, descrive il nostro legame con questa
grande civiltà senza rendere il tutto pesante e oppressivo.

The proposal of my poster has born from de union of a city icon
like the main square of Reggio Emilia and a typically african
symbol like the baobab. The idea of my project was to represent
the meeting of two cultures, but with different styles of repre-
sentation. The tree that I have drawn is in contrast with the
picture of the square because if the tree had been realized in a
more realistic style, this union would have been too “violent”,
while in this way the fusion of the two cultures is more “fic-
tional”, as the title describes. On the baobab broken branch is
fastened a ribbon with the name of Nelson Mandela: the great fi-
gure of this man help us understading the origin of the tree and
of our bond with Africa. The poster has been realized through
graphic tablet that, with a simple and playful style, describes
our friendship with this great culture, without making it heavy
and oppressive.

continente africano che crea un efficace impatto visivo. Il
verbo battere è associato al visual del cuore, inevitabilmente
collegato all’idea del legame di amicizia che ci è stato
chiesto di rappresentare. “RE” è evidenziato perché rende
immediato capire che si parla della città di Reggio Emilia. In
questo modo si crea un legame forte tra il visual e il titolo.
Sotto al titolo, la frase: “Reggio-Africa, un’amicizia oltre
il tempo e la distanza” riassume l’idea alla base di questo
progetto contenendo anche le parole chiave che ci erano state
indicate dal committente. Il fine del progetto è diffondere la
conoscenza di questa amicizia tra Reggio e l’Africa, che va
oltre il tempo: c’era nel passato, c’è nel presente e ci sarà nel
futuro, e va oltre la distanza: l’Africa è lontana da noi, anche
per alcuni aspetti culturali ma può diventare vicina e amica.

My final proposal is a heart made with the outline of the
African continent that creates a strong visual effect. The
verb “beat” is associated with the visual of the heart that
is necessarily linked to the idea of the bond between Reggio
that we were asked to represent. “RE” is highlighted because
it makes easier to understand that we talk about the city of
Reggio Emilia. In this way it is created a closer bond between
the visual and the title. Below the title, the sentence: “Reggio-
Africa, a friendship beyond time and distance” summarises the
idea at the base of this project and moreover it contains the
words that our customer gave us. The aim of the project was to
spread the knowledge of the friendship between Reggio Emilia
and Africa, that goes beyond the time: there was in the past,
there is in the present and there will be in the future. This
friendship goes beyond the distance too: Africa is far from us,
also because of its culture, but it can became closer to us.

RiconciliazIl manifesto rappresenta l’unione tra due popoli,
impersonati da due animali locali, un bufalo nero
africano e una vacca rossa reggiana in atteggiamento
di amicizia, un’amicizia diversa, perché nata tra due
popolazioni lontane e particolari, ma che fanno delle loro
diversità i loro punti di forza.
I due personaggi sono raffigurati con la tecnica del disegno
manuale e vettoriale, per sottolineare la dimensione
fiabesca di questo incontro.
I colori dei testi riprendono quelli del visual per creare
un’unità che concorra a comunicare i valori di pace,
solidarietà e futuro dettati dalle parole di Nelson Mandela.

The poster represents the union of two populations,
embodied by two local animals, a black african buffalo and
a red cow of Reggio Emilia in a friendly attitude.
This attitude is different, because it has born between two
distant and particular populations, that have changed
this diversity into strength.
The two protagonists are represented with the technique of
the manual and vectorial drawing, in order to underline
the “fairy-tale” dimension of this meeting.
The colours of the texts recall the ones of the visual in
order to create a communion that can convey the values of
peace, solidarity and future, like in Nelson Mandela words.
EMMA FILIPPIReggio Emilia e l’Africa sono i due protagonisti in questa
storia d’amicizia, gravitano l’uno sull’altro e a unirli
è un vivace feat. inscritto in un cuore. Questo termine
è l’abbreviazione della parola inglese “featuring” e si
riferisce alla collaborazione musicale di due artisti
che registrano insieme la stessa canzone. Negli ultimi
anni il cosiddetto feat. è diventato una vera e propria
tendenza, diffusa anche nel settore della moda dove
indica la collaborazione di stilisti nella creazione di un
particolare prodotto che risulta subito più ricercato e
ambito, poiché unico.
Il vivace pattern colorato è un rimando alla tradizione
tribale africana ma ricorda anche, per le linee spezzate e
i colori accesi, la più recente streetart che caratterizza
alcune zone di Reggio Emilia.

Reggio Emilia and Africa are the protagonists of this
history of friendship: they are gravitating one another
and they are united by a feat inscribed in a heart. This
word is the contraction of the english term “featuring”
and it refers to the music collaboration between two
artists that record together the same song. In the last
years the so-called feat is become a real trend, popular
also in the fashion industry where it reveals the
collaboration of stylists for the creation of a particular
product that immediately becomes more cherished and
desired, because it is unique. The vivid coloured pattern is
a recall to the tribal african tradition, but also reminds
of the broken lines and the bright colours, like the street
art that characterises some areas of Reggio Emilia.
MONCO, PARENTILa proposta prevede il connubio tra la Stazione
Mediopadana, architettura ampliamente apprezzata e
conosciuta da tutta la popolazione reggiana ed alcuni
pattern tipicamente africani.
Questi elementi visivi, principalmente la Stazione
Mediopadana, vengono poi estremamente sistetizzati
per conferire maggior dinamismo all’insieme e nella
composizione vengono posizionati uno sotto all’altro
creando l’illusione che sia proprio la Stazione che,
frammentandosi, dia origine ai pattern africani.
Questo a testimonianza di un reciproco scambio di affetto,
unione e multiculturalità.

Our proposal considers the union of the high- Speed
station, characterised by architectures amply appreciated
and known by all the population of Reggio Emilia and some
patterns typically african.
These visual elements, mainly the high-speed station, are
extremely summarized in order to convey more dynamism to
the combination and in the composition are put one under
the other creating the illusion that is the station wich,
splitting, gives rise to the African patterns.
This witnesses a mutual exchange of affection, union and
multiculturalism.

per questo ho deciso di utilizzare due cuori anatomici,
per quanto sintetizzati, che si uniscono tramite le
arterie, perché il cuore è considerato il punto da
cui nascono tutti i sentimenti, tra cui l’amicizia, e
l’unione tramite le arterie sottolinea la concretezza e
la inscindibilità del rapporto. Il carattere inverosimile
della rappresentazione esprime metaforicamente la potenza
della relazione tra due comunità lontane geograficamente
e culturalmente eppure vicine e solidali.
Per il titolo ho scelto una frase di Mandela che, oltre
ad evidenziare il suo centenario, rende molto chiaro la
natura del rapporto Reggio-Africa.

My project is based on the concept of friendship: that’s
why I have decided to use two anatomical hearts, even
if stylised, that are connecting through the arteries,
because the heart is considered the part where all the
feelings start, including friendship. Moreover the union
through the arteries underlines the concreteness and
the strenght of this bond. The improbable nature of the
representation expresses metaphorically the power of the
friendship between two different and distant cultures but
close and supportive.
I have chosen a sentence of Mandela as title, not only
because this year it is the centenary of his birth, but
also because I have wanted to make clear the nature of the
friendship between Reggio Emilia and Africa.
GIADA PONGILUPPILo scopo era quello di rendere visibile l’avvicinamento
di un’altra realtà alla nostra che pian piano si inserisce
nel nostro quotidiano e modo di vivere, per tale motivo
si è scelto di unire due elementi caratterizzanti delle
rispettive realtà: i cappelletti e la forma geografica
dell’ Africa. Quest’ultima è resa visibile tramite il
posizionamento adeguato dei cappelletti. Il progetto
ha sfruttato il valore affettivo verso questo elemento
culinario così da far avvicinare e coinvolgere il più
possibile i cittadini a tale iniziativa, perché simbolo di
famiglia, valori e tempo trascorso insieme. Si è scelta
la fotografia per il suo modo dettagliato di raccontare
un attimo, ed al contempo per il modo genuino che non ne
deturpa l’essenza.

My purpose was to make clear the approach of Reggio Emilia
to Africa, which is becoming part of everyday life. For
this reason I have chosen to join two characterizing
elements of these realities: cappelletti and the outline
of the African continent. The shape of Africa was given
through the positioning of cappelletti. I have wanted to
used a culinary product that is really important for our
tradition in order to put in contact and involve citizens in
this initiative, because cappelletti represent family and
the idea of spending time together. I have chosen to use a
picture because it describes in detail a moment and, at the
same time, it never spoils its essence.
SARA RAINIERIHo concepito il territorio reggiano come la bocca
attraverso la quale le regioni dell’ Africa australe hanno
potuto dar voce alle proprie ideologie politiche.
L’occhio scuro simboleggia la determinazione di questi
popoli d’Africa a non arrendersi e a rimanere legati al
proprio terreno.
Sia bocca che occhio sono stati realizzati tramite
la tecnica dello stencil che ricorda un po’ i pattern
africani, ma poi questi stessi sono stati “digitalizzati”
per avvicinare l’immagine al linguaggio visivo attuale e
per ricordare che l’Africa non è più quel paese arretrato
che molti pensano.
A raccordare il tutto è il titolo del manifesto, il quale
completa il volto, prendendo il posto del naso.

I have imagined the territory of Reggio Emilia like the
mouth through which regions of southern Africa have given
voice to theirs political ideas.
The dark eye represents the determination of these african
populations to never give up and stay linked to their
territory.
Both the mouth and the eye are done through the technique
of the stencil that remembers African patterns, but later
they have been “digitized” in order to put in contact the
imagine with the current visual language and remember
that Africa is no longer the underdeveloped country that
everyone thought.
The title of the poster connects all the parts and takes the
place of the nose.

5 dicembre 2018Per la realizzazione del mio manifesto ho deciso di
utilizzare vecchie fotografie per sottolineare le radici
storiche dell’amicizia tra Reggio e l’Africa.
L’immagine di sfondo ad esempio è ripresa da un manifesto
del ’82, con il quale si voleva commemorare la firma del
patto di solidarietà con l’Africa.
In primo piano, invece, vediamo alcuni bambini volti a
simboleggiare il futuro di un’amicizia senza pregiudizi,
dove dei palloncini portatori di gioia aumentando di
dimensione creano l’illusione di volare verso lo
spettatore, fino ad uscire dal manifesto.
Ho scelto proprio i palloncini per dare un’idea di libertà,
in grado di sorvolare i confini spaziali.

For the realization of my poster I have chosen to use old
pictures in order to underline the historical roots of the
friendship between Reggio Emilia and Africa.
The imagine that I have employed as background was taken
from a poster of 1982, with which was celebrated the
signing of the solidarity pact with Africa.
In the foreground, we can see some children that symbolize
the future of a friendship without preconceptions. The
balloons, symbol of joy, increasing their dimensions,
create the illusions of flying toward the spectator, up to
come out from the poster.
I have chosen the balloons in order to give an idea of
freedom that can fly over boundaries.
