BARCELONA PROGRAMME Barcelona offers an abundance of object lessons through its heritage of Art, Design and Architecture. The mission is to make that as yet “invisible” city visible by means of the visual language of drawing. 9
COURSE OBJECTIVES •to have a strong understanding of Barcelona’s diverse history, culture, traditions, art, planning initiatives, and architectural practices; •to be able to perform architectural and urban design technical sketching from observation to more formal layouts; •to gain immense knowledge on the famous architects and masterplanners, such as Antoni Gaudì (the Sagrada Familia, Casa La Pedrera, Park Guell, etc) and Ildefons Cerdà (the Exaimple town extension). 10
THE ART OF BUILDING CITIES: BARRI GÒTIC •The Barri Gòtic is the starting point of any exploration in Barcelona. •From the Roman Citadel, called Barcino, to the Gotìc Barrio, Barcelona is a picturesque place, full of street landmarks, scenes and textures like La Boqueria, along La Rambla, where you'll discover layers of fruit and veg, olives and herbs in full color. 11
THE TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE OF SPAIN: THE POBLE ESPANYOL Built for the International Exposition of 1929, Poble Espanyol is a large- scale model village celebrating architectural styles from all over Spain. Designed by the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, the intention was to carry out an architectural experiment – creating an “ideal” model for a village which would represent popular Spanish architecture. 12
THE TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE OF SPAIN: THE POBLE ESPANYOL The village was to have been demolished after the Exhibition but, as a result of the impact it had and the many voices who opposed its destruction, the village was left standing. 13
THE GARDEN CITY UTOPIA AND THE MAGICAL LANDSCAPE OF PARK GUELL Park Güell is a magical place that emulates an English garden city. After seeing the gatehouses, based on designs for the opera Hansel and Gretel, you can walk up a splendid staircase, past a mosaic lizard to what once was a marketplace. 14
THE GARDEN CITY UTOPIA AND THE MAGICAL LANDSCAPE OF PARK GUELL Patterns and colors from ceramic tiles in Park Güell where Gaudì designed a snake-shaped bench bordering the upstairs terrace. 15
THE GEOGRAPHY OF PERCEPTION: LIFE, LIGHT AND COLORS 16
THE LAST GREAT TEMPLE: LA SAGRADA FAMILIA Nicknamed the «Dante of Architecture», Antoni Gaudì dedicated the last part of his life to the design of the Sagrada Familia. Gaudí perfected his personal style, inspired by the organic shapes of nature, putting into practise a whole series of new structural solutions originating from his deep analysis of ruled geometry. 17
THE LAST GREAT TEMPLE: LA SAGRADA FAMILIA To this he added a great creative freedom and an imaginative ornamental style. His works acquired a great structural richness, with shapes and volumes devoid of rational rigidity or any classic premise. 18
THE CONTEMPORARY RAVAL Like Paris, Barcelona has a literary flavour; many writers have been inspired by the lower Raval, generally referred to as the Barrio Chino. Major contemporary key buildings are MACBA Barcelona's Contemporary Art Museum located opposite the Barcelona's Contemporary Cultural Centre. 19

THE CATALAN MODERNISME: LA MANZANA DE LA DISCORDIA In the Passeig de la Gràcia, there are some masterpieces: Gaudí's Casa Batlló, built for a textile tycoon and La Pedrera that hosts the Espai Gaudì. Nearby, you can gaze at his rivals' architecture: the shiny Casa Amatller by Puig i Cadafalch, and the Casa Lleó Morera by Domènech i Muntaner. 21

OLIMPIC DRAWING GAMES: THE MONTJUIC INTERNATIONAL STYLES Montjuïic is perfect for a leafy stroll with great views; scattered across the landward side are buildings from the 1992 Olympic Games, including Santiago Calatrava's Olympic needle, the lighthouse, a vast cemetery, the Olympic stadium and the Jardi Botànic. Here It is located the Pavelló de la Repubblica by Mies van der Rohe (1929) and the cultural centre CaixaForum. 25
