MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT, DOMINIC REPPUCCI
Yes it’s that time of the year again when all Altavillesi and friends get together to celebrate
the Feast of San Pellegrino Martire. This will be our fourth Festa at The Annunciation Church
and it promises to be bigger and better.
Our aim for the Festa is to reinforce and celebrate the culture and traditions of the Altavillesi
community and educate younger generations about our traditions and our patron Saint.
We welcome everyone to come along on the 20th January and enjoy great food and
entertainment.
A special thank you to Fr Anthoni Adimai and Fr Michael Romeo for their guidance and
support.
The Festa would not be possible without the generous and very welcome support of
numerous companies, individuals and organisations. We sincerely appreciated what you
have all done for this event.

A historical perspective of the San Pellegrino Matire Festa
in Adelaide by Antonio Bruno and Walter Iasiello.
Since the early immigration in the 1950’s families from Altavilla Irpina have always had a special
devotion to their patron saint - San Pellegrino Matire. It all began initially in Adelaide with Altavillese
making donations to their Saint and home village for the poor and needy in Altavilla Irpina. Through
door knocking around the metropolitan area Mr Pasquale Varricchio was the first person in 1956 to
start the collection process. As more families arrived in Adelaide many other “paesani” continued
volunteering their time and efforts in the annual collection and devotion to their saint.
As the Altavillese population in Adelaide grew the elders began discussions about establishing their own
own local festa honoring San Pellegrino Matire. Their will was not to lose their village identities and
Italian cultural heritage and to spend money on their own festa in Norwood.
In 1976 a group of Altavillese formed the San Pellegrino Matire Festa Committee inspired by Enrico
Grande as the first President. The first committee included Nicola Iasiello - Secretary and Robert Forte
- Treasurer and Committee members - Antonio Bosco, Armando Bruno, Francesco Bruno, Pellegrino
Bruno, Antonio Carmelengo, Giovanni Ciampi, Giovanni Coscia, Francesco DiTroia, Dominic
Mastrogiacomo, Renato Mastrogiacomo, Antonio Porcaro, Giuseppe Reppucci, Antonio Severino,
Charlie Sabatino, Sabino Sabatino, Bernadino Tirri (Prospect), Bernadino Tirri (St Peters), Nicola
Tropeano, and Pellegrino Vardaro.
Father Ambrose Byrne SJ, Parish Priest and Father Andrew Zerafa SJ of St Ignatius Church were instrumental in assisting
the President and the committee with their first San Pellegrino church celebrations on 25th August 1977. The first Mass
was celebrated by Father Ambrose Byrne SJ in Latin. The church was packed and was a great success, attended by a wide
range of people including many Altavillese from the surrounding Norwood suburbs. The Mass paved the way for a new
era for the church in planning for future celebrations mirroring the traditional SP Festa in Altavilla Irpina, Italy.
Given the success of the Mass and its patronage Father Andrew Zerafa SJ was assigned to continue the spirit of the
movement of producing the first Adelaide San Pellegrino Martire festa. This was no small fete with many details to
attend to ie stringing up to one kilometer of supporting wire, one kilometer of electric wire with 2000 fairy lights,
supplying power to amplifiers, pie and pizza warmers, spaggetti cookers, obtaining various approvals. At one point they
had to remove a complete fence to fit electrical equipment and then reinstall it at the end of the festa.
The 29th January 1978 saw the first San Pellegrino Martire festa. It was such a success the committee decided after so
much work preparing for it, it was a pity to enjoy it so briefly. In January 1979, the celebrations extended from 2 pm
Saturday to 11.00pm Sunday 29th. Mass was held at St Ignatius Church Norwood.
It was estimated 15,000 people participated in the celebrations which commenced in the morning through the streets
of Norwood with a large Battenti procession group escorted by the police, Bishop Kennedy, Father Zeraffa SJ, four
smartly dressed Carabinieri, the Guiseppe Verdi Band and the San Pellegrino Committee carrying an effigy of San
Pellegrino Martire. The procession preceded the people’s mass in the Church and the Italian Coral Society took part in
the liturgy.
After mass, celebrations included traditional lunch of pizza, pasta, zeppolli, sfogliatelle, baba cakes
and other Italian specialties. Later in the afternoon people enjoyed games, sideshows, contests
and fine Italian food. Later at night festivities continued including cooking of sausages and
steaks, singing, dancing and wine drinking. To top off festa celebrations, the St Ignatius grounds
were lit with a spectacular fireworks display show.

Fin dalla prima migrazione negli anni ‘50, le famiglie di Altavilla Irpina hanno sempre avuto una devozione speciale per il loro
santo patrono San Pellegrino Martire. Tutto iniziò ad Adelaide grazie agli Altavillesi che facevano donazioni al loro santo
e paese d’origine per i poveri e i bisognosi di Altavilla Irpina. Nel 1956, Pasquale Varricchio fu la prima persona ad avviare
il processo di raccolta delle donazioni, andando di casa in casa nell’area metropolitana. Con l’arrivo di nuove famiglie ad
Adelaide, molti altri “paesani” hanno continuato a offrire volontariamente il loro tempo e a impegnarsi nella raccolta annuale
di donazioni e negli atti di devozione per il santo.
Mentre la popolazione di altavillesi ad Adelaide cresceva, i più anziani iniziarono a discutere la possibilità di una festa locale
in onore di San Pellegrino Martire, poichè non volevano perdere il contatto con le loro origini e con il patrimonio culturale
italiano, e volevano usare le donazioni per dare vita a una loro festa a Norwood.
Nel 1976, un gruppo di altavillesi formò il comitato per la Festa di San Pellegrino Martire sotto la guida di Enrico Grande come
primo presidente. Il primo comitato era composto da Nicola Iasiello (segretario), Robert Forte (tesoriere) e dai membri del
comitato: Antonio Bosco, Armando Bruno, Francesco Bruno, Pellegrino Bruno, Antonio Carmelengo, Giovanni
Ciampi, Giovanni Coscia, Francesco DiTroia, Domenico Mastrogiacomo, Renato Mastrogiacomo, Antonio Porcaro, Giuseppe
Reppucci, Antonio Severino, Charlie Sabatino, Sabino Sabatino, Bernardino Tirri (Prospect), Bernardino Tirri (St Peters),
Nicola Tropeano e Pellegrino Vardaro.
Il parroco, padre Ambrose Byrne SJ, e padre Andrew Zerafa SJ della Chiesa di Sant’Ignazio furono determinanti
nell’assistere il presidente e il comitato con le loro prime celebrazioni in chiesa di San Pellegrino il 25 agosto 1977. La prima messa fu
celebrata da padre Ambrose Byrne SJ in latino. La chiesa era gremita e fu un grande successo, con la partecipazione di
moltissime persone tra cui molti altavillesi dalle zone circostanti a Norwood. La messa ha aperto la strada a una nuova era
per la chiesa nella pianificazione di future celebrazioni che rispecchiano la tradizionale Festa di San Pellegrino ad Altavilla
Irpina, in Italia.
Dato il successo della messa e del suo patronato, padre Andrew Zerafa SJ ha avuto il compito di portare avanti lo spirito
del movimento che ha dato vita alla prima festa di San Pellegrino Martire ad Adelaide. Non si trattava di una piccola festa,
c’erano molti dettagli di cui occuparsi; ad esempio: collegare fino a un chilometro di filo di supporto, collegare un chilometro
di filo elettrico a 2000 luminarie, fornire elettricità agli amplificatori, agli scaldavivande, ai fornelli per cuocere gli spaghetti
e ottenere vari permessi. A un certo punto è stato necessario rimuovere completamente una recinzione per fare spazio alle
apparecchiature elettriche e poi installarla nuovamente alla fine della festa.
Il 29 gennaio 1978 si tenne la prima festa di San Pellegrino Martire. Fu un tale successo che, dopo tanto lavoro di
preparazione, il comitato realizzò che era un peccato godersi la festa per così poco tempo.Nel gennaio 1979, le celebrazioni
si sono protratte dalle due di sabato pomeriggio alle undici di sera di domenica 29. La messa venne celebrata nella chiesa di
Sant’Ignazio a Norwood.
Si stima che 15.000 persone abbiano partecipato alle celebrazioni che hanno avuto inizio la mattina per le strade di
Norwood con una grande processione di Battenti scortati dalla polizia, il vescovo Kennedy, padre Zeraffa SJ, quattro carabinieri
elegantemente vestiti, la banda Giuseppe Verdi e il comitato di San Pellegrino che portava un’effigie di San Pellegrino Martire.
La processione ha preceduto la messa in Chiesa e l’Italian Choral Society ha preso parte alla liturgia.
Dopo la messa, le celebrazioni sono proseguite con il tradizionale pranzo italiano di pizza, pasta, zeppole, sfogliatelle, dolci
di babà e altre specialità italiane. Più tardi nel pomeriggio la gente si è divertita con giochi, attrazioni, gare e buona cucina
italiana. La sera la festa è continuata con la cottura di salsicce e bistecche, canzoni, balli e vino. Per completare le celebrazioni
della festa, uno spettacolo pirotecnico ha illuminato il cielo sulla chiesa di Sant’Ignazio.

San Pellegrino Matire and Altavilla Irpina by Pia Bosco
San Pellegrino was born in Rome when the Roman Empire was non-Christian. Under the rule of Emperor Commodus, the
Christian community, during this period, was persecuted for practicing their faith. Pellegrino who had a strong Christian
faith, relinquished material possessions and, without fear, turned to the streets of Rome to preach the Gospel and to
help the poor. He and three others (Eusebio, Pontian and Vincenzo) were captured by Roman soldiers and imprisoned.
Pellegrino resisted all attempts by the soldiers to bribe him and as a result he was tortured and brutally murdered in 192
AD on August 25th. He was martyred and his remains placed in the Catacombs of Ciriaca in Rome.
The connection that San Pellegrino has with Altavilla Irpina began many centuries later in 1780. At that time, the people
of Altavilla Irpina desired a saint as a patron/protector. Father Giuseppe Maria Crescitelli (great uncle of the future Saint
Alberico Crescitelli of Altavilla Irpina) appealed to Pope Pius VI who accepted the request. Crescitelli, accompanied by
Monsignor Landini, a bishop, went to the Catacombs of Ciriaca to select a martyr.

For three consecutive days, the two men, walked through the Catacombs
with the intention of choosing a martyr. Each day they heard a noise as they
passed the niche that contained the relics of San Pellegrino. They interpreted
this as a sign from San Pellegrino that he wanted to go to Altavilla Irpina. It
was decided then that San Pellegrino would be the saint for Altavilla Irpina.
The relics of San Pellegrino were taken to Altavilla Irpina on the 11 April, 1780
and were eventually permanently placed in the main church and so began
the tradition each August of the annual San Pellegrino Feast. It was in this
same church in August 1896, that 9 year old Francesco Forgione, attending
a San Pellegrino feast day mass with his father, witnessed the miraculous
healing of a deformed child. The 9 year old boy was the future Padre Pio, and
many say that it was this experience that helped convince him to enter the
priesthood.
San Pellegrino, due to the miracles attributed to him, has attracted many
devotees, not just from Altavilla Irpina but surrounding provinces also. On
his Feast Day of August 25th, the Battenti, dressed in their characteristic
white with red sash, proceed along the main streets to the shrine of San
Pellegrino in the main Church of Altavilla. Their march is punctuated by the
intermittent sound of horns to break the silence. Upon arrival at the Church
entrance, they enter, proceeding on all fours with their face close to the
ground, until they reach the altar where the relics of San Pellegrino are held.
It is a unique and emotionally moving experience.
Since 1977, the Altavillesi community of South Australia have celebrated the
Feast Day of San Pellegrino in Adelaide.

San Pellegrino nacque a Roma quando l'Impero romano era anti-cristiano. Sotto il dominio dell'imperatore Commodo, i
cristiani erano perseguitati a causa della loro fede. Pellegrino, la cui fede cristiana era forte, rinunciò ai beni materiali e
percorse senza paura le strade di Roma per predicare il Vangelo e aiutare i poveri. Pellegrino e altri tre uomini (Eusebio,
Ponziano e Vincenzo) furono catturati e imprigionati dai soldati romani. Pellegrino resistette a tutti i tentativi dei soldati di

nella chiesa principale. Iniziò così la tradizione annuale della festa di San Pellegrino ad agosto. Fu in questa stessa chiesa,
nell'agosto del 1896, che Francesco Forgione, un bambino di nove anni che partecipò alla festa di San Pellegrino con il padre,
assistette alla guarigione miracolosa di un bambino deforme. Quel bambino di 9 anni era il futuro Padre Pio e molti dicono che
fu questa esperienza a fargli decidere di entrare nel sacerdozio.
San Pellegrino, grazie ai miracoli a lui attribuiti, ha attratto molti devoti, non solo da Altavilla Irpina ma anche dalle province
circostanti. Il 25 agosto, il giorno della sua festa, i Battenti vestiti con il loro caratteristico abito bianco con la fascia rossa,
procedono lungo le strade principali fino al santuario di San Pellegrino nella chiesa principale di Altavilla. La loro marcia
è interrotta dal suono intermittente di trombe che rompe il silenzio. All'arrivo all'ingresso della Chiesa, i Battenti entrano,
procedendo a quattro zampe con la faccia vicino al pavimento, fino a raggiungere l'altare dove si trovano le reliquie di San
Pellegrino. È un'esperienza unica ed emozionante.
La comunità di altavillesi in Sud Australia celebra la festa di San Pellegrino ad Adelaide dal 1977.

FATHER MICHAEL ROMEO
Father Michael Romeo is a priest of the Archdiocese of Adelaide. He was born
in Adelaide in 1983 attending school at St Joseph’s Primary, Hectorville and
Rostrevor College, Woodforde. He pursued tertiary studies at Adelaide
University from 2002-2006, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (History), Diploma in
Languages and a Graduate Diploma of Education.
He studied for the Priesthood at Corpus Christi Seminary in Melbourne and was
ordained on 29 August 2014. Since ordination he has served as assistant priest in
the parishes of Mount Gambier and Millicent. In January 2018, he was appointed the
Parish Priest of Penola.
Padre Michael Romeo è un sacerdote dell’arcidiocesi di Adelaide. È nato ad Adelaide nel 1983 e ha frequenta-
to la scuola elementare di St. Joseph, a Hectorville e il Rostrevor College, a Woodforde. Ha proseguito gli studi
universitari presso l’Università di Adelaide dal 2002 al 2006, ottenendo un diploma in lingue, una laurea in storia, e
un diploma post-laurea in insegnamento.
Padre Michael Romeo ha studiato per entrare nel sacerdozio al Corpus Christi Seminary a Melbourne ed è stato
ordinato sacerdote il 29 agosto 2014. Da quel momento, ha servito come viceparroco nelle parrocchie di Mount

Fr. Anthoni Adimai is the Parish Priest of Hectorville and Tranmere Parishes,
Archdiocese of Adelaide. He was born on the 12th July 1969 in Kanyakumari,
Tamil Nadu, India and was ordained priest on 13th June 2000. He served the
diocese of Jammu & Kashmir, India till 2008 and the Archdiocese of Madras -
Mylapore, India from 2008-2010. From February 2010 onwards he serves as the
Parish Priest of Hectorville and Tranmere.
Padre Anthoni Adimai è il sacerdote delle parrocchie di Hectorville e Tranmere,
Arcidiocesi di Adelaide. E’ nato il 12 luglio 1969 a Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, in I
ndia, ed è stato ordinato sacerdote il 13 giugno 2000. Ha servito la diocesi di Jammu &
Kashmir, in India fino al 2008 e l’Arcidiocesi di Madras - Mylapore, India dal

11.15am The procession will leave the church and travel the usual streets, accompanied by the
Maltese band, the Carabinieri in full uniform, other religious associations with their banners
and special guests. Everyone is invited to attend.
12.00pm The Battenti will leave the Meals on Wheels hall on Montacute Road, arriving at the
Annunciation Church at 12:30pm.
12.30pm Solemn mass celebrated by FR. Michael Romeo and FR. Anthoni Adimai. The mass will be
accompanied by the Monteverdi Singers Choir.
2.00pm Social program commences. Stay and enjoy the “The Sopranos” - (Nick Catalano & Fred
Tedesco)” and various artists. Enjoy the many homemade traditional and delicious dishes such
as Fusilli, Trippa, BBQ, Zeppole, Pizza and Gelati. Beer, wine and soft drinks will be on sale.

5.00pm Claudia Migliaccio is a female vocalist based in Adelaide and also travels around Australia
to perform.
6.00pm U N I T Y Trio is dynamic, exciting group and you can’t help but sing along during the live
performance with harmonies all round and a soul/pop repertoire with your classic Italian
tunes.
7.00pm I Due Giovanni - John Casalbore and John Macri are two local musicians who have performed
together and individually over many years in a variety of bands.
8.00pm “AMICI DELLA CAMPAGNA” Passionate Italian Australian musicians who have captured the
spirit, vibrance and colour of traditional regional Italian folk songs.
8.40pm Alfredo Malabello Known as the “Italian Voice of Romance”. His parents inspired a love of
traditional Italian folk songs. His passion was heightened further by his aunt in Italy,
(zia Emilia), who sent records to Australia of popular contemporary Italian songs every three
months. From these humble beginnings he has now performed in 15 countries around the
globe and has produced 3 albums that were a success in the Australian market.
