MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT, DOMINIC REPPUCCI
The Australian Catholic Bishops Council have invited all of us to join them in celebrating a
year of youth. This year 2018 is the year we embrace all young Altavillesi and their friends
to come to the Festa and start their own tradition of coming to the Festa meeting friends ,
enjoy good food , drinks and entertainment.
So if this is your first or 41st year of celebrating the Festa of San Pellegrino tell a friend or
better still bring them along as the only way we can continue celebrating the Festa is by the
youth coming along and creating their own memories and traditions.
The Festa would not be possible without the generous and very welcome support of
numerous companies, individuals and organisations. We sincerely appreciated what you
have all done for this event. Our sponsors have been identified in this publication and I
would encourage you support those companies that have assisted with the Festa. The
work by the Altavilla Sports and Social Club Management Committee and the Festa Sub
Committee has been tireless and outstanding. Their time, energy and commitment will be
rewarded with another great Festa.

Il Consiglio cattolico dei vescovi australiani ci ha invitato a unirci a loro per celebrare un anno di gioventù. Il 2018 è l’anno
in cui accogliamo tutti i giovani altavillesi e i loro amici perchè iniziano la loro tradizione di venire alla festa dove potranno
incontrare amici, gustare buon cibo e bevande e godersi l’intrattenimento.
Quindi se questo è il tuo primo o il tuo quarantunesimo anno di celebrazione della festa di San Pellegrino, dillo a un amico o
meglio ancora porta un amico, perché l’unico modo in cui possiamo continuare a celebrare la festa è che i giovani vengano
alla festa e creino i loro ricordi e le loro tradizioni.
La festa non sarebbe possibile senza il generoso e gradito supporto di numerose aziende, persone e organizzazioni.
Apprezziamo sinceramente ciò che avete fatto per questo evento. Potete trovare i nostri sponsor su questo libretto e vi

Battenti are, for many, the icons of the Festa. In Italy,

Uniting Hall). Thankfully the weather was kinder than
last year.
And so with the arrival of the Battenti the mass began.
The mass was celebrated by Archbishop Philip Wilson
and co-celebrated with Monsignor Cappo, Fr. Anthony
Adimai, Fr. Peter Zwaans, Father Michael and Deacon
Remo.
Once the mass concluded many patrons stayed to
enjoy the food and beverages, included trippa, traditional
fusilli, pizza, zeppole and the charcoal BBQ.

2017 - Celabrazione del 40° anniversario della festa di San Pellegrino Martire La festa di San Pellegrino Martire, tenutasi il 15 gennaio 2017, ha segnato il 40° anniversario di questo evento ad Adelaide. La festa, che è avvenuta per la prima volta nel 1977, celebrava le tradizioni e le cerimonie degli immigrati provenienti da Altavilla Irpina, in Italia. Quarant’anni sono tanti. Mentre molte cose intorno a noi sono cambiate o scomparse, ma le tradizioni della festa sono forti come prima. Queste tradizioni vanno oltre il cibo servito durante la festa e la processione dei Battenti. L’elemento fondamentale della festa è il suo spirito - e questo spirito brilla luminoso nelle molte persone che offrono il loro tempo e le loro risorse per rendere questa festa possibile. Alcune di queste persone hanno contribuito fin dalla prima celebrazione. La festa si è tenuta ancora una volta presso la Chiesa dell’Annunciazione di Hectorville. E così con l’arrivo dei Battenti è cominciata la messa. La messa è stata celebrata dall’arcivescovo Philip Wilson con l’aiuto di Monsignor Cappo, Padre Anthony Adimai, Padre Peter Zwaans, Padre Michael e del Diacono Remo. Dopo la messa, molti partecipanti sono rimasti a godersi il cibo e le bevande, inclusi la trippa, i fusilli tradizionali, la pizza, le zeppole e barbecue. In serata, la festa aveva l’aria di una vera e propria festa italiana di persone che si riuniscono in una piazza. Bastava chiudere gli occhi per sentirsi ad Altavilla sulle note della musica italiana e il profumo di cibo italiano nell’aria. Il cantante napoletano Antonio Siano e suo figlio Andrea ci hanno intrattenuto con melodie napoletane senza tempo. Con le esibizioni degli artisti, la folla ha trascorso una perfetta notte d’estate. Non tutti coloro che erano presenti sapevano la storia di San Pellegrino o la storia della festa, ma non ha alcuna importanza. La festa era, ed è ancora, una celebrazione dello stare insieme. Molte persone vengono alla festa perché per molti anni sono andate con i loro genitori e nonni. Ora portano i loro figli. Altri sono venuti per la prima volta. masses of the Festa of St Pellegrino Matire in January 2018.
Il Comitato Sub San Pellegrino matura è onorata di avere padre Anthoni celebrano le masse della Festa di San
Pellegrino Martire nel gennaio 2018.
Fr. Anthoni Adimai is the Parish Priest of Hectorville and Tranmere Parishes,
Archdiocese of Adelaide. He was born on the 12th July 1969 in Kanyakumari,
Tamil Nadu, India and was ordained priest on 13th June 2000. He served the
diocese of Jammu & Kashmir, India till 2008 and the Archdiocese of Madras -
Mylapore, India from 2008-2010. From February 2010 onwards he serves as the
Parish Priest of Hectorville and Tranmere.
Padre Anthoni Adimai è il sacerdote delle parrocchie di Hectorville e Tranmere,
Arcidiocesi di Adelaide. E’ nato il 12 luglio 1969 a Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, in I
ndia, ed è stato ordinato sacerdote il 13 giugno 2000. Ha servito la diocesi di Jammu &
Kashmir, in India fino al 2008 e l’Arcidiocesi di Madras - Mylapore, India dal
2008-2010. Dal febbraio 2010 egli serve come Parroco presso le parrocchie di
Father Anthoni Adimai Hectorville e Tranmere.

FROM THE PREMIER
Now in its fifth decade, the San Pellegrino Martire Festa continues
to be a joyous celebration of faith and family.
It brings together members of the Altavillesi community, along with
people from the wider city of Adelaide, for the Battenti procession
and other events.
The festival evokes the cultural and religious traditions of
Campania – a region I had the honour of visiting in 2015 – and
reminds us of the immeasurable contribution of Italians, generally,
to South Australia.
I commend the Altavilla Irpina Sports & Social Club for graciously
sharing this occasion with the people of this State, and I wish the
group all the very best for the years ahead.

My Aunt Giuseppina, my daughter Lisa De Guglielmo and granddaughter Samantha Sproles departed for Rome
on the Emirates flight on the 8th of August 2017. We picked up our Renault Meganne from Europecar at Rome
Fumicino airport. The trip was uneventful and long with one stop over at Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Let me
just say to those of you who have not been there, it’s absolutely huge.
We arrived at the Bello Paese and was greeted by our host Pietro Rosato, his lovely wife Pina and his family. We had
a well earned rest in his apartment on the Corso Garibaldi for two days, remember there was an eighty four year old
and a six year old in our little group.
Those two days vanished very quickly indeed and before we knew it we were on our way for a driving trip
throughout Europe. Florence, Paris, Lucerne, Venice, Vasto and back to the Bello Paese Altavilla Irpina.
We arrived in Altavilla on the 24th August 2017, just in time for the famous world class Festa of San Pellegrino. We
saw the Battenti and were amazed by their determination and absolute passion for the faith.
What amazed me was that the Battenti actually came from all the surrounding towns. One of the photographs
show the Battenti proudly wearing their white outfits with their red sashes as they overtly display their devotion to
their faith.
The whole town is geared up for this festa with the magical lighting effects which displayed different colours
according to the music being played. The framework for the overhead lights covered the whole length of the
Corso. I did not expect the brilliant effects of the music and the traders on their trestles all along the whole
length of Corso Garibaldi producing a joyous atmosphere. The festa actually lasted four days and culminated in a
fantastic light show with fireworks on the last night. Sleep? Who got any? Who needed any anyway? As a treat the
short black coffee or stretto as the locals call it added to the festive spirit. It was an opportunity for friends and
family to connect from all around the world including Adelaide and to be a part of the special Mass for San
Pellegrino on the 25 August. Our trip hadn’t quite finished. It was off to see Pompeii and Sorrento, but again that is
another story.

Il viaggio di una vita. - Agosto 2017
Io, mia zia Giuseppina, mia figlia Lisa De Guglielmo e mia nipote Samantha Sproles siamo partiti per Roma con un volo
Emirates l’8 agosto 2017. Abbiamo preso una Renault Meganne da Europecar all’aeroporto di Roma Fumicino. Il viaggio
è stato lungo ma tranquillo con una fermata a Dubai e negli Emirati Arabi Uniti. Lasciatemi solo dire a chi non c’è stato
che Dubai e gli Emirati Arabi Uniti sono davvero incredibili.
Siamo arrivati nel Bel Paese dove siamo stati accolti da Pietro Rosato, dalla sua adorabile moglie Pina e dalla sua
famiglia e ci siamo presi un meritato riposo nell’appartamento di Pietro su Corso Garibaldi per due giorni (vi ricordo che
c’erano una donna di ottantaquattro anni e un bambino di sei anni nel nostro piccolo gruppo).
Quei due giorni sono passati molto velocemente e prima che potessimo accorgercene eravamo in viaggio in macchina
per l’Europa: Firenze, Parigi, Lucerna, Venezia, Vasto e ritorno al bel paese Altavilla Irpina.
Siamo arrivati ad Altavilla il 24 agosto 2017, giusto in tempo per la Festa di San Pellegrino che è famosa in tutto il
mondo. Abbiamo visto i Battenti e siamo rimasti colpiti dalla loro determinazione e assoluta passione per la fede.
Ciò che mi ha colpito è che i Battenti provenivano da tutte i paesi circostanti. Una delle fotografie mostra i Battenti che
indossano con orgoglio abiti bianchi e fasce rosse mentre mostrano apertamente devozione alla loro fede.
L’intera città si è preparata per questa festa con magici effetti di luce che cambiava colore a seconda della musica. La
struttura di luci copriva l’intero corso. Non mi aspettavo i brillanti effetti della musica e i commercianti su tutto Corso
Garibaldi che creavano un’atmosfera gioiosa.
La festa è durata quattro giorni ed è culminata in un fantastico spettacolo di luci con fuochi d’artificio l’ultima sera.
Dormire? E chi ha dormito? E comunque chi ne aveva bisogno? Il caffè ristretto, come lo chiamano gli abitanti del posto,
rendeva l’atmosfera ancora più festosa.
È stata un’opportunità per amici e familiari da tutto il mondo, compresa Adelaide, di riunirsi e partecipare alla messa
speciale per San Pellegrino il 25 agosto. Il nostro viaggio, però, non era ancora finito; siamo poi andati a vedere Pompei
e Sorrento, ma questa è un’altra storia.

12.00pm The Battenti will leave the Meals on Wheels hall on Montacute Road, arriving at the
Annunciation Church at 12:30pm.
12.30pm Solemn mass celebrated by FR. Anthoni Adimai.
The mass will be accompanied by the Guido Coppola and the Monteverdi Singers Choir.
2.00pm Social program commences. Stay and enjoy the “The Sopranos – (Nick Catalano & Fred
Tedesco)” and various artists. Enjoy the many homemade traditional and delicious dishes
such as Fusilli, Trippa, BBQ, Zeppole, Pizza and Gelati. Beer, wine and soft drinks will be on
sale.
4.30pm The procession with Battenti will leave the church and travel the usual streets,
accompanied by the Maltese band, the Carabinieri in full uniform, other religious
associations with their banners and special guests. Everyone is invited to attend.
5.00pm Official opening of the Festa and Speeches.
6.00pm The entertainment programme continues with “JC (John Casalbore) and the Zeppoletones.
7.00pm Mark Anthony presents an exceptionally dynamic Elvis tribute that excudes the raw energy
and true energy of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
8.00pm Every once in a while, a performer emerges with an UNBELIEVABLE talent, an
UNDENIABLE passion and a UNIQUE ability to mesmerize the masses with every
performance. From Naples in Italy, Raffaele Pierno presents an authentic Italian experience.
9.45pm Fireworks.
10.00pm Continuation of the social programme.
