DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, FOOD AND Gruppo: Cascone G. ENVIRONMENT (DI3A). D’Emilio A. BUILDING AND LAND ENGINEERING SECTION. Porto S.M.C. Effects of different cooling systems on the heat stress and the behavior of dairy cows The research aims to reduce cow heat stress in hot humid climate by using a sprinkler system coupled with forced ventilation installed in the feeding lane of a free-stall barn without access to a paddock. The protocol include: • Measurement of climatic parameters inside the barn and outside. • Measurement of physiological and productive parameters. • Monitoring of cow behavior by means of a multi- camera video-recording system The research is carried out within the activities of
Edilizia zootecnica - Progetti nazionali finanziati e in corso - Resp. Prof. ssa Claudia Arcidiacono - UNICT Call: COST ‘ European Cooperation in Science and Technology’ Cost Action CA16106: Ammonia and Greenhouse gases Emissions from Animal Production Buildings (LivAGE) Durata del progetto: 48 mesi (dal 2017) Ruolo: Proponente, Componente e Substitute del Management Committee Partecipanti: Claudia Arcidiacono, Simona M.C.

Attività gruppo Prof. Guarino •Association between environmental predisposing risk factors and leg disorders in broiler chickens •Due to the strong connection between leg disorders, litter quality and thermal comfort, the aim of this study was to find the association between environmental predisposing factors and leg problems, in order to identify solution for the management of the micro-climate of the broiler house. •Micrometric titanium dioxide photoabates odor from swine manure storage •Intensive livestock farms emit gases and pose a problem for the health of nearby inhabitants. The catalyst used was a commercial micrometric TiO2 samples (Kronos 1077), on which we deposited silver nanoparticles, to give to our catalyst anti-bacterial properties. •Strategies for NH3 and PM Reduction from pig farms to improve air quality, animal welfare and urban environment. (SUBMITTED TO: LIFE17 ENV/IT/000292) •The main goal of the LIFE-SPRAy project is to reduce ammonia (NH3) and particulate matter (PM) emissions from agricultural practices through the demonstration of different innovative techniques (such as air scrubber, TiO2 slabs, LECA®, manure acidification, …) that are applicable/transferable to pig farming (barns, manure storage and land spreading).

Funding opportunities Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA) A new Partnership on Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA) will develop much-needed solutions for a more sustainable management of water and agro-food systems. The main objective of the ten-year initiative (2018 – 2028), which is partly funded by EU's research and innovation programme Horizon 2020, is to devise new R&I approaches to improve water availability and sustainable agriculture production in a region heavily distressed by climate change, urbanisation and population growth. The partnership will be financed through a combination of funding from participating countries (currently €274 million), and a €220 million contribution from the EU through Horizon 2020, its research and innovation funding programme (2014 – 2020).
