Summary (Sintesi)
Astronomer specialized in Astroinformatics and astronomical technologies. After graduating in Computer
Science with specialization in Artificial Intelligence, between 1994 and 2008 he assumed the positions of
INAF Head of Assembly, Integration and Verification (AIV Manager) of the ESO-VST (European
Southern Observatory - VLT Survey Telescope) project in situ (Cerro Paranal, Chile), lecturer and contract
professor of Computer Architecture and Astronomical Technologies at the Departments of Computer
Science and Physics of the Federico II University, respectively, and member of several international
astrophysical instrumentation projects with ESO (VIMOS, Visible Infrared Multi Object Spectrograph),
INAF (TNG, Telescopio Nazionale Galileo), INFN (NEMO, NEutrino Mediterranean Observatory).
Since 2009, he has held and holds various roles and positions of scientific responsibility in international
astrophysics projects from Earth and from Space (DAME, CLASH-VLT, ESA-Euclid, ESO-ALMA, SKA,
VST-KiDS), various involvements in projects co-financed by PRIN-MIUR, INAF and MIUR-awards),
obtaining, on a competitive basis and as Co-I, access to international observation facilities (ESO VISTA and
VST surveys), European projects (FP7 Vialactea, EU COST Action TD-1403 Big-Sky-Earth data, H2020
ITN SUNDIAL, H2020 SYNERGY EcoGal), as well as academic teaching assignments at various
universities.
In March 2021 he was appointed by the Director of the INAF National Scientific Unit for Optical and
Infrared Astronomy, as national manager of the program "Italian participation in the Rubin-LSST project
(V. Rubin Observatory - Legacy Survey of Space and Time) ".
In May 2021 he received the honorary appointment of “Euclid Consortium Builder” from the international
board of the ESA-Euclid space mission.
The main research topics concern: photometric redshifts, detection and classification of variable and lensed
objects, galaxies, quasars and high redshift active galactic nuclei, evolution of star-forming regions,
metallicity, globular clusters, galaxy clusters, R&D in data mining and machine learning, Big Data
management and distributed data processing environments, astronomical instrumentation control systems,
analysis and quality control of scientific data.

He is the author of about 200 scientific works, including monographs, contributions to academic volumes,
articles in specialized journals, contributions to conferences and technical reports, as well as a member of
international editorial committees.
Astronomo specializzato in Astroinformatica e tecnologie astronomiche. Conseguita la Laurea in Informatica
con specializzazione in Intelligenza Artificiale, tra il 1994 e il 2008 ha assunto gli incarichi di responsabile
INAF dell’Assemblaggio, Integrazione e Verifica (AIV Manager) del progetto ESO-VST (European
Southern Observatory - VLT Survey Telescope) in situ (Cerro Paranal, Cile), professore incaricato e a
contratto di Architettura degli Elaboratori e Tecnologie Astronomiche presso, rispettivamente, i
Dipartimenti di Informatica e Fisica dell'Università degli Studi Federico II e membro di diversi progetti
internazionali di strumentazione astrofisica con ESO (VIMOS, Visible Infrared Multi Object Spectrograph),
INAF (TNG, Telescopio Nazionale Galileo), INFN (NEMO, NEutrino Mediterranean Observatory).
A partire dal 2009, ha ricoperto e ricopre diversi ruoli e incarichi di responsabilità scientifica in progetti
internazionali di Astrofisica da Terra e dallo Spazio (DAME, CLASH-VLT, ESA-Euclid, ESO-ALMA,
SKA, VST-KiDS), vari coinvolgimenti in progetti co-finanziati PRIN-MIUR, INAF e MIUR-premiali),
ottenimento, su base competitiva e in qualità di Co-I, dell'accesso a facilities osservative internazionali (ESO
VISTA e VST surveys), progetti europei (FP7 Vialactea, EU COST Action TD-1403 Big-Sky-Earth data,
H2020 ITN SUNDIAL, H2020 SYNERGY EcoGal), oltre a incarichi didattici accademici presso varie
Università.
Nel Marzo 2021 è stato incaricato, dal Direttore dell’Unità scientifica nazionale INAF per l’Astronomia
ottica ed infrarossa (OPT-NIR UTG), a ricoprire il ruolo di responsabile nazionale (national manager) del
programma “Partecipazione italiana al progetto Rubin-LSST (V. Rubin Observatory – Legacy Survey of
Space and Time)”.
Nel Maggio del 2021 ha ricevuto la nomina onoraria di “Euclid Consortium Builder” dal Board
internazionale della missione spaziale ESA-Euclid.
I principali argomenti di ricerca riguardano: redshift fotometrici, rivelazione e classificazione di oggetti
variabili e lensati, galassie, quasar e nuclei galattici attivi ad alto redshift, evoluzione di regioni di
formazione stellare, metallicità, ammassi globulari, ammassi di galassie, R&D in data mining e machine
learning, gestione Big Data e ambienti distribuiti di processamento dati, sistemi di controllo di
strumentazione astronomica, analisi e controllo di qualità dei dati scientifici.
E’ autore di circa 200 lavori scientifici, tra monografie, contributi a volumi accademici, articoli su riviste
specializzate, contributi a Convegni e rapporti tecnici, nonché membro di comitati editoriali internazionali.
