Luigi M. Ugolini The unpublished Malta project WRITTEN 1924-35 • DISCOVERED 2000 • PUBLISHED 2021 Midsea Books are proud to announce the publication of Luigi Maria Ugolini’s survey of Maltese prehistoric monuments which was never published and thought lost for several years. Between 1924 and 1935, an Italian archaeologist, Luigi Maria Ugolini, undertook several research visits to the Maltese Islands. The aim of the visits was to record and study the prehistoric sites and the artefacts held at the Valletta Museum and to publish the results of the survey. ‘A tour-de-force of After the publication of the first book, Malta: Origini della Civiltà meticulous archival, Mediterranea, in 1934, and his demise two years later, Ugolini’s photographs and notes, were believed to have been lost. No trace of his archive was ever found historiographic, even though Ugolini himself had anticipated the publication of his findings in and archaeological four volumes. For years it was believed that such a source of information, about investigation. The manuscripts Dr Reuben Grima for three volumes envisioned and drafted by Ugolini but never completed have now been handsomely published, and complemented by an in-depth study locating his ideas in the scholarship of his day, as well as discussing his interpretations in the light of more recent scholarship. The companion volume also gives a comprehensive and gripping account of the increasingly delicate political balancing act that he had to perform as a scholar funded by Mussolini’s government, even while Italy was challenging Malta’s status as a Crown Colony of Great Britain. This work is an important milestone for Mediterranean prehistory, and for the history of politics and archaeology in the interwar period.’ The set of four volumes is sold as one with the possible addition of the re-edited volume published in 1934. This print run is limited to 350 copies.
