La “Modernità simbolico-mitologica dell’antico nella Letteratura italiana e nelle Arti" è un filone
ermeneutico interdisciplinare, che si avvale della storia delle religioni antiche e delle sue fonti
come precipua chiave di decifrazione di opere sia letterarie sia artistiche di tutti i tempi: opere
semanticamente oscure ed enigmatiche perché – insospettabilmente per la gran parte dei lettori
– sono state concepite dai rispettivi autori in prospettiva cripto-pagana, avvalendosi pertanto di
concetti e di fonti prelevati dalle antiche religioni pagane, sia mediterranee sia non mediterranee,
oppure dalle eresie del cristianesimo e delle altre religioni (argomenti, questi, nel complesso di
norma poco conosciuti sia dai letterati sia dagli studiosi di discipline artistiche).
Riuscire a scoprire il significato nascosto nella scriptio inferior dell'opera, concepita e strutturata
come uno scrigno-palinsesto, e codificato attraverso immagini, sia poetiche sia artistiche, dalla
valenza simbolico-religiosa cripto-pagana o cripto eretica per lo più dissimulata è lo scopo
prioritario del ricercatore-investigatore del filone ermeneutico della “Modernità simbolico-
mitologica dell’antico nella Letteratura italiana e nelle Arti".

Nell’ambito di questo percorso verranno prese in considerazione:
a) simbologie e tematiche cripto-pagane attinenti alle religioni antiche non omerico-olimpiche,
bensì arcaiche, pre-omeriche, non olimpiche o anti-olimpiche, e altresì a quelle misteriche,
mediterranee antiche, nonché non mediterranee;
b) simbologie e tematiche (anche in prospettiva mitologico-religiosa sincretistica e comparata,
laddove le tematiche e le fonti individuate nelle immagini e nelle opere esaminate dovessero
autorizzare il ricorso a una siffatta prospettiva) inerenti a: Bacco (-Dioniso-Zagreo-Sabazio-Jacco;
Orfeo); Venere (-Afrodite-Astarte-Tanit-Ishtar); Adone (-Tammuz); Iside, Osiride, Horus, Aton,
Ammone, Serapide; Saturno (Kronos-Moloch-Baal Hammon; Aion, Zervan); Mitra; Shiva; Odino.
c) simbologie esprimenti tematiche apocalittiche cripto-pagane.
IV. 2. Tracce di eresie del cristianesimo e dell’ebraismo, nonché del paganesimo semitico, fenicio-
punico, nascoste “sotto il velame” delle immagini, dei simboli e dei temi della Letteratura italiana
e delle Arti dal Rinascimento ai giorni nostri.
IV. 3. Tracce di simbologie e di tematiche cripto-esoterico-iniziatiche e cripto-pagane nascoste
“sotto il velame” della narrativa di Jules Verne (Nantes, 1828 – Amiens, 1905) e di Maurice
Leblanc (Rouen, 1864 – Perpignan, 1941) e riprese “sotto il velame” della letteratura italiana – sia
“popolare”, sia colta – e delle arti.
IV. 4. Il cripto-paganesimo degli “Antichi” di Lord Dunsany (London, 1878 - Dublin, 1957), di Arthur
Machen (Caerleon-on-Usk, Monmouthshire, 1863 - Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, 1947) e di
Howard Phillips Lovecraft (Providence, Rhode Island, USA, 1890-1937) nella Letteratura italiana e
nelle Arti.
IV. 5. Tematiche e simboli del paganesimo antico, sia non omerico-olimpico, sia misterico, sia

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
The hermeneutics of the “symbolic-mythological modernity of antiquity” is a still pioneering
branch of research in Italian literature and art studies. Its aim is to discover the hidden meaning of
works of literature and arts where other approaches failed or proved unsatisfactory.
Its distinguishing trait consists in using, along with all the results of historical, critical and
philological studies, ancient pagan religious and mythological sources and heresiological
traditions as decisive and yet unexpected interpretative tools to understand literary and artistic
works produced in the modern era and in Christian times, but skillfully conceived by their authors
– who identify themselves with ancient people that had come back to life in modern times in
disguise as crypto-pagans in incognito – as erudite enigmas.

The main objective of the modernity of the antiquity which, more precisely, should be considered
as «hermeneutics of the “symbolic-mythological modernity of antiquity”», is to open the lid of the
shrine-palimpsest work, which means scraping the scriptio superior of the literary and artistic
images so as to reveal the true meaning that their author – riddler in disguise – veiled in the
scriptio inferior.

symbols, myths and themes of the “modernity of antiquity” from the Renaissance to the twenty-
first century
IV. 1. «Ut pictura poësis»
The symbols and themes of this section must refer to:
a) archaic, pre-Homeric, non-Olympic or even anti-Olympic ancient religious systems, or to ancient
mystery cults, either Mediterranean or non-Mediterranean;
b) themes and figures that can be analyzed (even from a comparative and mythological-religious
perspective, if necessary) include: Bacchus (-Dyonisus-Zagreus-Sabatius-Jacchus; Orpheus);
Venus (-Aphrodite; Astarte; Tanit; Ishtar); Adonis (-Tammuz); Isis, Osiris, Horus, Aton, Amun,
Serapis; Saturn (Cronus, Moloch, Baal Hammon; Aion, Zervan); Mithra; Shiva; Odino.
c) crypto-pagan symbols referring to apocalyptic themes.
IV. 2. Traces of ancient Christian and Jewish heresies and of the Jewish, Phoenician-punic,
